Beyond the Meteor

The Viluy (or Vilyui) Traps constitute a large igneous province located in eastern Siberia, formed between approximately 377 and 374 million years ago during the Late Devonian. The volcanic episode released massive quantities of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to severe climatic disruptions. Initial global warming was followed by cooling and widespread oceanic anoxia. This volcanism is frequently cited as one of the triggers of the Kellwasser Event, the first of two major extinction pulses of the Late Devonian, which eliminated roughly 75% of species on Earth. The associated basaltic lavas cover an estimated area of hundreds of thousands of square kilometers. The event demonstrates how large igneous provinces can destabilize the global climate system and trigger biotic crises of planetary scale.

The Middle Permian extinction, approximately 260 million years ago at the end of the Capitanian Age (also called the Guadalupian crisis), is often overlooked in favor of the more famous Permian-Triassic extinction at 252 Ma. However, it was a significant event that eliminated approximately 60% of marine species. The main identified cause is the Emeishan Traps volcanism, a large igneous province in present-day southwestern China, which covered over 500,000 km² with flood basalt. Associated global warming caused anoxia in shallow tropical seas. Fusulinid foraminifera, which had been dominant components of marine reefs for over 100 Ma, were nearly completely wiped out. Giant brachiopods (Leptodus, Richthofenia) and rugose corals also collapsed. The event preceded the Permian-Triassic extinction by approximately 8 Ma, and ecosystems had not fully recovered when the second blow arrived.

The Siberian Traps constitute the largest igneous province (Large Igneous Province, or LIP) of the Phanerozoic. Eruptions covered more than 7 million square kilometers of central Siberia with flood basalt, with a total estimated volume between 3 and 4 million cubic kilometers of magma. Volcanism lasted approximately 1 million years, with peak activity concentrated in an interval of just 300,000 years around 252 Ma. Eruptions were both subaerial (surface lava flows) and intrusive: magma sills penetrated sedimentary basins rich in organic carbon, evaporites, and coal, vaporizing these deposits and releasing colossal quantities of CO2, methane, halogenated compounds, and SO2 into the atmosphere. High-precision U-Pb geochronology (Burgess et al., 2014; 2017) demonstrates that the onset of eruptions coincides with the beginning of the biological collapse of the Permian-Triassic extinction. The climatic result was catastrophic: global warming of 8 to 10 degrees Celsius in the tropics, severe ocean acidification, partial destruction of the ozone layer by halogenated compounds, and widespread marine anoxia. The basaltic rocks today form the Putorana Plateau and vast areas of central Siberia, recognizable by their step-like morphology (traps, from the Swedish trappa, meaning staircase).

Between 250 and 240 million years ago, during the Early to Middle Triassic, an unprecedented evolutionary explosion led terrestrial reptiles to conquer the oceans. Just a few million years after the devastation of the Permian-Triassic extinction, which eliminated 96% of marine species, new groups of reptiles rapidly colonized empty oceanic niches. Ichthyosaurs appeared around 250 Ma, already displaying advanced aquatic adaptations, quickly evolving into dolphin-like forms. Nothosaurs and pachypleurosaurs (eosauropterygians) arose around 245 Ma as long-necked coastal predators. Placodonts, armored with crushing teeth, fed on mollusks in shallow reefs. Thalattosaurs, serpentine and enigmatic forms, diversified in varied marine environments. This radiation was one of the fastest biological recoveries in the fossil record, completely transforming marine ecosystems in less than 10 million years.

The Carnian Pluvial Episode (CPE), occurring between 234 and 232 million years ago, was a period of torrential global rainfall lasting approximately 1 to 2 million years. The event was triggered by massive volcanism of the Wrangellia Large Igneous Province (modern western Canada), which injected enormous volumes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, causing global warming, ocean acidification, and extreme intensification of the hydrological cycle. Mega-monsoonal rains transformed arid environments into swamps and humid forests across vast regions of Pangaea. In the oceans, roughly one-third of all marine genera disappeared, including conodonts, ammonites, and entire reef communities. On land, the crisis eliminated dominant groups such as rhynchosaurs and dicynodonts, opening ecological space for new groups. The CPE is now recognized as one of the major extinction and biological turnover events of the Mesozoic, comparable in severity to some of the "Big Five" mass extinctions, though it was formally identified only in recent decades.

The first dinosaurs appeared between 233 and 230 million years ago, during the Late Triassic, in what is now northwestern Argentina and southern Brazil. The Ischigualasto Formation in San Juan Province, Argentina, preserves fossils of the earliest confirmed dinosaurs: Eoraptor lunensis, an omnivore about 1 meter long, Herrerasaurus ischigualastensis, a 6-meter carnivore, and Panphagia protos, one of the earliest sauropodomorphs. In Brazil, the Santa Maria Formation (Rio Grande do Sul) produced Buriolestes schultzi and Saturnalia tupiniquim. These animals were relatively small, bipedal, and minor components of their ecosystems, which were dominated by rhynchosaurs, cynodonts, and pseudosuchians. Only after the ecological crises of the Carnian Pluvial Episode and the end-Triassic extinction did dinosaurs become the dominant group on land.

Pterosaurs were the first vertebrates to achieve powered flight, predating birds by approximately 80 million years. Their closest relatives, lagerpetids, were small terrestrial reptiles that lived around 236 Ma. The oldest known pterosaurs date to approximately 225-220 Ma (Norian, Late Triassic), including genera such as Preondactylus and Eudimorphodon from the Italian Alps. Their wings were formed by a membrane of skin and muscle stretched between the body and an extremely elongated fourth finger. From the very beginning, pterosaurs exhibited pneumatic skeletons (hollow bones) and relatively large brains, essential adaptations for flight. Throughout the Mesozoic, they diversified enormously: from small Triassic insectivores to the gigantic azhdarchids of the Late Cretaceous such as Quetzalcoatlus, with wingspans up to 12 meters, the largest flying animals of all time.

The first true mammaliaforms appeared between 225 and 205 million years ago, during the Late Triassic. Brasilodon quadrangularis from southern Brazil (~225 Ma) is currently considered the oldest mammal in the fossil record, based on its diphyodont dentition (two generations of teeth). Morganucodon watsoni from Wales (~205 Ma) is the best-documented Triassic-Jurassic mammaliaform, known from hundreds of specimens. These animals were small (5-15 cm), nocturnal, and insectivorous, with endothermic metabolism, fur, and a derived jaw joint between the dentary and squamosal. The transition from non-mammalian synapsids (such as cynodonts) to true mammals was gradual, documented by one of the most complete transitional fossil series in paleontology. Mammals coexisted with dinosaurs for 165 million years, remaining predominantly small until the K-Pg extinction opened space for their diversification.

The Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) represents the largest flood basalt event of the Mesozoic in geographic extent, with lava flows covering regions of what are now North America, South America, Europe, and Africa. The volcanism occurred mainly between 201 and 200 million years ago, coinciding precisely with the end-Triassic mass extinction and the earliest stages of Pangaea fragmentation. Isotopic data indicate that eruptions occurred as intense, rapid pulses, possibly related to deep mantle plumes. The total volume of extruded magma may have exceeded 2 million cubic kilometers. Eruptions released large quantities of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide, inducing abrupt climate changes. Diabase intrusions associated with CAMP are found today as dikes and sills in Triassic sedimentary rocks throughout the North Atlantic region.

The fragmentation of Pangaea was a gradual tectonic process that began in the Late Triassic, around 230 to 200 million years ago, and continued through the Cretaceous. The supercontinent first split into two large blocks, Laurasia to the north and Gondwana to the south, with the opening of the Tethys Sea. Subsequently, Gondwana progressively fragmented into Africa, South America, Antarctica, Australia, and the Indian subcontinent. Laurasia separated into North America and Eurasia. The process was driven by mantle convection and tectonic plate activity. Pangaea's breakup had profound biogeographic consequences, as animal populations became isolated on drifting continents, leading to independent evolution in different lineages. Ocean currents and climate patterns were radically altered as new oceans and basins formed. The fragmentation is directly responsible for the current geographic distribution of species and the biogeography of dinosaur fossils.

The Karoo-Ferrar volcanism, approximately 183 million years ago during the Early Jurassic (Toarcian), represents one of the largest continental magmatic events of the Mesozoic. The Karoo Province in present-day South Africa and the Ferrar Province in Antarctica formed simultaneously, suggesting a single sub-Gondwanan mantle plume. The estimated volume of igneous rock produced exceeds 2.5 million cubic kilometers. The event coincides with the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE-T) and a smaller extinction that eliminated numerous benthic marine species. Volcanism injected enormous quantities of methane (from interaction with coal deposits) and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, inducing warming of up to 5 degrees Celsius within just a few millennia. The Karoo dike swarms are among the best-preserved examples of large continental magmatic systems, with diabase dikes still visible in the South African landscape today.

The Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE-T), also called the Jenkyns Event, occurred approximately 183 million years ago during the Early Jurassic. The event is characterized by a large negative carbon-13 isotope excursion, indicating severe perturbation of the global carbon cycle. Ocean surface temperatures are estimated to have risen 3 to 7 degrees Celsius. Oxygen was depleted in closed oceanic basins and shallow epicontinental seas, leading to deposition of organic-rich black shales (the Posidonia Shale in Europe). These bituminous sediments are today an important petroleum source in some countries. Karoo-Ferrar volcanism was the primary cause, with additional contributions from methane released by gas hydrates beneath the seafloor. Extinctions mainly affected benthic marine organisms, including bivalves and brachiopods, while ammonites underwent significant faunal turnover. The event lasted approximately 300,000 to 600,000 years.

After the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event crisis (OAE-T, ~183 Ma), caused by the Karoo-Ferrar volcanism, marine ecosystems underwent a profound reorganization. Ichthyosaurs, which had lost diversity during the oceanic anoxia, radiated into new forms in the Middle and Late Jurassic. Ophthalmosaurus, with its enormous eyes adapted for deep diving, became one of the most successful genera. Plesiosaurs diversified into two distinct lineages: the long-necked plesiosaurids (such as Cryptoclidus and, later, Elasmosaurus) and the large-headed, short-necked pliosaurids (such as Liopleurodon and Pliosaurus). Liopleurodon, with a skull up to 1.5 meters long, became one of the top predators of the Jurassic seas. This renewal created more complex and stratified marine food chains than those of the Triassic, with ecological niches ranging from filter feeders to pelagic superpredators. Marine crocodylomorphs (thalattosuchians) also diversified during this period, competing with ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs for resources. The renewed marine fauna of the Middle Jurassic remained relatively stable until the Early Cretaceous, when further reorganization would occur with the decline of ichthyosaurs and the rise of mosasaurs.

Between 180 and 170 million years ago, during the Early to Middle Jurassic, North America began separating from Europe and Africa, initiating the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean. This process was a direct consequence of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) volcanism, which weakened the continental crust along a rift zone extending thousands of kilometers. Separation began in the south, between North America and Africa, and progressed gradually northward. Shallow epicontinental seas flooded the rift zones, creating tropical marine environments where extensive evaporite and carbonate beds were deposited. Europe and North America remained connected by intermittent land bridges in the far north (Greenland-Scotland) until the Paleogene. The opening of the North Atlantic fundamentally altered ocean circulation patterns, modified global climate, and separated populations of terrestrial animals that had previously circulated freely between the two continents.

Between 170 and 145 million years ago, during the Middle to Late Jurassic, sauropods reached dimensions unprecedented in the history of terrestrial life. Animals such as Diplodocus (25 meters), Brachiosaurus (26 meters and 56 tonnes), Supersaurus (33-35 meters), and Barosaurus exceeded the mass of the largest terrestrial mammals that ever existed by an order of magnitude. Sauropod gigantism was made possible by a unique combination of traits: pneumatic skeleton with hollow bones reducing weight; extremely long necks allowing high-volume feeding without locomotion; elevated metabolism combined with a unidirectional respiratory system (similar to birds); and egg-laying reproduction, which supported larger populations than mammalian gestation. The Morrison Formation (western USA) and Tendaguru Formation (Tanzania) document the ecosystems where these giants lived, on seasonal alluvial plains with conifer and fern forests.

Between 160 and 125 million years ago, from the Late Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous, the first eutherians appeared, the group that includes all modern placental mammals, from bats to whales to humans. Juramaia sinensis, discovered in Liaoning Province, China, dated to approximately 160 Ma (Late Jurassic), is the oldest known eutherian, a shrew-sized animal that lived in forests and fed on insects. Eomaia scansoria, also from China (~125 Ma, Early Cretaceous), is the second milestone: an arboreal eutherian with preserved fur impressions. The divergence between eutherians (placentals) and metatherians (marsupials) is one of the most important events in mammal evolution, as it defined the two lineages that would dominate terrestrial ecosystems after the extinction of dinosaurs. Both fossils were found in the exceptional Jehol Biota, which preserved unparalleled anatomical details.

The origin of birds is one of the best-documented and studied evolutionary events in paleontology. Birds are now recognized as theropod dinosaurs of the clade Maniraptora, and their evolutionary history is recorded in extraordinary fossils. Archaeopteryx lithographica, discovered in the lithographic limestones of Solnhofen, Bavaria (Germany), dates to approximately 150 million years ago (Late Jurassic) and is the oldest known bird with uncontroversially avian features: asymmetric flight feathers, furcula, and carpometacarpus. However, later discoveries in China's Yixian Formation revealed feathered dinosaurs from 125 to 130 Ma (such as Microraptor and Sinornithosaurus), as well as even more basal forms with filamentous protofeathers. The evolution of feathers preceded flight, likely for thermoregulation, display, and egg brooding. Powered flight probably evolved from tree-dwelling animals (trees-down model) or from ground runners (ground-up model), a debate still open.

The Paraná-Etendeka Large Igneous Province (LIP) is the largest flood basalt volcanism event of the Cretaceous, with an estimated volume of 1.5 million cubic kilometers of igneous rock. Eruptions occurred in southwestern Gondwana between approximately 135 and 132 Ma, with peak activity around 134.4 Ma. In Brazil, the flows of the Serra Geral Formation cover more than 1.2 million km² of the Paraná Basin, forming the basaltic plateaus of southern and southeastern Brazil. In Namibia, the same flows are exposed as the Etendeka Traps: the two provinces were contiguous before the opening of the South Atlantic. The volcanism was driven by the Tristan da Cunha mantle plume and represented the initial phase of western Gondwana fragmentation. High-precision geochronology (Gomes and Vasconcelos, 2021) confirms the brevity of the main event: the volumetric eruptions lasted less than 1 Ma. The volcanism released CO2 and SO2 into the atmosphere, disturbing the global carbon cycle, and accelerated basalt weathering, altering the marine nutrient cycle.

The opening of the South Atlantic Ocean began during the Early Cretaceous, around 130 to 120 million years ago (Aptian), with the separation of South America and Africa. The event was preceded by extensive flood basalt volcanism (the Paraná-Etendeka Province across South America and Africa) and by the development of a rift basin along the southern Gondwana margin. The separation was progressive, beginning at the far south and advancing northward. The opening created a shallow epicontinental sea (similar to the modern Red Sea) that gradually expanded into a full ocean. The separation had dramatic biogeographic consequences: populations of dinosaurs, crocodilians, mammals, and other species that once shared the same territory were permanently separated. The new water body altered global ocean circulation patterns, influencing climate and nutrient cycling worldwide.

The Angiosperm Revolution was the explosive diversification of flowering plants (angiosperms) during the Early and Middle Cretaceous, between approximately 125 and 90 million years ago. Before this period, terrestrial ecosystems were dominated by ferns, conifers, cycads, and ginkgos. Angiosperms, with their specialized flowers and seed-enclosing fruits, rapidly co-evolved with pollinating insects, developing highly efficient dispersal mechanisms. The fossil record shows that angiosperms went from marginal presence to plant dominance in just 30 to 40 million years, an extraordinary evolutionary pace. The earliest known flowers date from the Early Cretaceous (around 130 Ma), including Archaefructus from China and fossil magnolias from the southeastern United States. The diversification of flowering plants radically transformed terrestrial ecosystems, providing new food resources (more nutritious leaves, fruits, nectar) for insects, mammals, and herbivorous dinosaurs.

The Ontong Java-Manihiki-Hikurangi Plateau, formed between 122 and 120 million years ago in the South Pacific, constitutes the largest igneous province (Large Igneous Province, LIP) in Earth's history. When eruptions ceased, the plateau covered approximately 1% of Earth's surface, representing an estimated volume of 80 to 100 million cubic kilometers of basaltic magma. The magma production rate may have exceeded that of the entire global mid-ocean ridge system at the time. The volcanism injected immense quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, possibly doubling atmospheric CO2 concentration within a few hundred thousand years. Consequences included extreme global warming, ocean acidification, and the triggering of Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a (OAE-1a). The plateau was later fragmented by plate tectonics into three separate segments: Ontong Java (western Pacific), Manihiki (central Pacific), and Hikurangi (near New Zealand).

Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a (OAE-1a), also known as the Selli Event, occurred approximately 120 million years ago during the Aptian (Early Cretaceous). It was one of the two largest anoxic events of the Mesozoic, with an estimated duration of 1.1 to 1.3 million years. The event was triggered by volcanism of the Ontong Java Plateau, the largest igneous province in Earth's history, which injected massive volumes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The result was extreme global warming (4 to 8 degrees Celsius increase in ocean surface temperatures), ocean acidification, and widespread marine anoxia. Tropical oceans became partially uninhabitable, causing significant extinction of marine organisms, particularly planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton. The event is recorded globally by an abrupt negative carbon-13 isotope excursion completed in only 22,000 to 47,000 years, indicating an extremely rapid perturbation of the carbon cycle.

The Western Interior Seaway was a shallow epicontinental sea that divided North America into two subcontinents during the Late Cretaceous, between approximately 100 and 68 million years ago. Up to 1,000 kilometers wide and rarely deeper than 900 meters, the sea extended from the Arctic to the Gulf of Mexico. Its emergence resulted from the uplift of the Rocky Mountains to the west (Sevier orogeny) combined with globally elevated sea levels during the Cretaceous thermal peak. The sea was an extraordinary ecological laboratory: it harbored mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, enormous pterosaurs such as Pteranodon, and a rich fauna of fish and invertebrates. The eastern margin (Appalachia) and western margin (Laramidia) developed distinct dinosaur faunas, with different titanosaurs and hadrosaurs evolving in semi-continental isolation. The sea began to retreat around 70 Ma when Cordilleran uplift reduced relative sea levels.

Mosasaurs (Mosasauridae) appeared around 98 million years ago from small semi-aquatic lizards related to modern monitors and snakes. In a geologically instantaneous interval of just 4 million years, they diversified and dominated all of the planet's oceans, occupying ecological niches ranging from coastal predators to open-ocean pelagic superpredators. Mosasaurus hoffmannii reached 17 meters in length. Tylosaurus proriger, up to 13 meters, hunted sharks, other mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and marine birds. Prognathodon specialized in crushing shelled mollusks using flattened teeth. Globidens had spherical teeth adapted for crushing ammonites. The rise of mosasaurs coincides with the decline of ichthyosaurs (extinct by about 90 Ma) and the reduction in plesiosaur diversity, suggesting mosasaurs competitively replaced them or filled niches vacated by anoxic events such as OAE-2 (94 Ma). By the end of the Cretaceous, mosasaurs were the dominant predatory vertebrates in all oceans. They were completely wiped out in the K-Pg event (66 Ma), leaving no direct descendants.

Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE-2), also known as the Bonarelli Event or Cenomanian-Turonian Boundary Event, occurred approximately 93 to 94 million years ago. It is considered the largest oceanic anoxic event of the Cretaceous, affecting the world ocean on a global scale. During OAE-2, the world ocean experienced expansion of oxygen minimum zones, resulting in widespread deposition of organic carbon-rich black shales. The positive carbon-13 excursion recorded in marine rocks worldwide indicates increased oceanic productivity followed by massive-scale burial of organic carbon.
